The DOMS disaster

Anyone who’s known me for a while will know that despite all the best intentions, I’m not actually one who enjoys the gym. In the morning I’m generally running late, and at night I just want to get home and relax.

It’s also mind-numbingly dull and to be honest I really do think that part of the problem is that I’m not egotistical enough to spend such a concentrated amount of time and energy on myself as is required to get results. Although I have to admit that on those occassions where I’ve managed to get a routine going I’ve been very happy with the end results, and so the lure is there to go again.

There’s a gym just around the corner, takes about 1 minute to get there. That’s close enough that it’s actually feasible. Trouble is that it’s a real boy-gym, all smelly and dusty and not particularly pleasant. The blokes who are there are not the kind you’d want to meet late at night when out by yourself. It’s run by the council, so there’s no frills at all. But, like I said, it’s very very close, and you can pay as you go which is also very attractive.

So I popped in last week and picked up a timetable and was quite impressed by the fact that, unlike almost every other gym I’ve considered, they do a half-hour lunch-time class that corresponds to my lunchtime.

Yesterday I went to the “Bums & Tums” class. It’s been a number of years since I last did a gym class like this and about half way through I was accutely aware of that fact. Also quite aware of the fact that I was going to be sore. By the time I finished and was back at work I was unable to walk down a flight of stairs!

This morning I’ve woken up with a distinct feeling of dread – I knew that DOMS would be setting in around lunch time and boy was I right! Forget the stairs, I can’t step off the curb without severe pain! Strangers are stopping me in the street to ask if I’m OK. My colleagues are concerned – well, they were until I told them why. Then they did exactly what I would do in their position – they laughed! I’m thinking tonight will be spent on the couch continuing with my recovery program, which consists of feeling sorry for myself, eating chocolate and watching True Blood.

If anyone knows any sure-fire ways to reduce the soreness let me know!
