I know, you were expecting something like those teenage mutant things that were so popular when I was younger – no, this is much cooler. This is a robot turtle.
I remember that someone had one of these at the computer club meetings we used to go to monthly with Dad. They would lay out big sheets of paper on the floor, set this little guy on top and plug it into a computer via a serial cable – then they would issue commands on the computer that would make it draw. You could even change pen colour.
Years later in school the maths department decided that learning the language (LOGO) was the secret to maths success – well, I guess it ticked the box for learning a programming language which for some reason it was decided fell under maths. Most people rightly could not see the point of drawing boxes on a screen and how that would relate to the real world. So we would sit there and issue commands and watch a little triangle move around the screen – no where near as much fun as drawing in real life with one of these babies!
Did you ever get to play with one of these? Did you get a boring maths introduction to programming in school?
