What a lovely weekend that was. Hired a car (they gave me a huge thing) and drove over to County Mayo on Friday night after work. Girls in the office decided that I had to go miles out of my way to avoid the traffic out of Dublin, so I took their advice and 4 hours later I arrive at the little B&B in Ballinrobe.
The house was lovely and the garden just stunning, and then I caught up with Ailish, Deirdre and Ger for a drink. Next day Ailish and I went for a scenic drive around the Connemara district – amazing countryside, just beautiful. We didn’t have time to do the tour of Ireland’s only fjord, so I’ll have to keep that one on the list for another day. But we did have time to visit Kylemore Abbey. Met the girls again for dinner at Ashford Castle, again just stunning.
One of the the funny things this weekend that I noticed is that last year the girls came to Melbourne and I had the hardest time understanding them – now I understand every word perfectly! I didn’t even notice at first, then Deirdre made a comment that "you understand us now".
Sunday I met up with Ailish for a morning walk and then headed to Galway for a look around and some shopping before making the trip home.
Ailish and I out driving around Mayo
Stunning countryside around the Connemara area of County Mayo in the north-west of Ireland.
Kylemore Abbey in County Mayo is just magnificent – used to be a private home/castle until the nuns bought the estate.
